Fimfarum

(Dir.: V.Pospisilova, J.Balej, A.Klimt, B.Pojar/Czech Republic/2006/97min)  (IC)  (A)
Category : Long/ Animation

Czech animators Aurel Klimt, Vlasta Pospísilová, Jan Balej, and Bretislav Pojar - all giants of the Czech puppet film movement - each helm one segment of the anthology film Fimfárum 2. Adapted from the short stories of Czech fantasist writer Jan Werich, the first segment, Three Sisters and One Ring unfolds in Bohemia in the late 1920s. Three sisters jointly discover a ring, and decide that it will go to the sister who humiliates her husband the most. The second segment, The Hunchback of Damascus observes three identical hunchbacks, all gifted swordsmen, and each lame in the right foot and blind in the left eye. The third, Uncle, Why Is the Sea Salty? dramatizes the experiences of two brothers (a rich one and a poor one), to whom Lucifer bequeaths a magic mill. And in the fourth segment, Tom Thumb, the title character transcends his dark origins to embark on adventures with The King and the family of The Snow Eater.

BRETISLAV POJAR (b. 1923) is one of the legendary masters of Czech animation, some of his award-winning films include The Lion and the Song (1960), They Met by Kolín (1965), To See Or Not To See (1969) etc.

VLASTA POSPÍŠILOVÁ (b. 1935), another legend of the Czech animation school made such films like The Magic Orchard (1982), Mrs Poverty (1984), When the Oak Leaves Fall (1991), Fulfilled Dream (2000) etc. in his long and illustrious career.

JAN BALEJ (b. 1958) worked as an artist at the Jirí Trnka Studio. His works include Tom Palecek (1994), Whirl (2004) etc.

AUREL KLIMT (b. 1972) is the youngest of the Fimfárum 2 group. A brilliant animation filmmaker, some of his notable works include Mashkin Killed Koshkin (1995), Bloody Hugo – An Eastern (1997), The Fall (1999) etc.

Sold Out

(Dir.: Marie Jose van der Linden/Netherland/2007/7.3min)  (IC)  (A)
Category : Short/ Animation

In the course of one day, we get a glimpse of the life of a middle-class family in Catholic Brabant – in the south of the Netherlands – in the 60s and 70s of the 20th century. A village shop stood for social contacts, long working hours, minimal income and a shared responsibility: the whole family worked in the shop. The children grew up and moved away. This one day illustrates the demise of this family business. Because of the advent of the supermarket and the lack of a successor, many small shopkeepers had to close up for good. Sold Out is a tribute to the largely vanished breed of small shopkeepers.

MARIE JOSÉ VAN DER LINDEN was born in 1955 in Nistelrode. She studied at the Academy of Visual Arts in Tilburg and following her graduation, she made her debut film Groten van het Noordzeestrand in 1991. Since then she has been active in making animation films, including a short film Free Your Mind for the MTV campaign.

GERRIT VAN DIJK was born in 1938 in Uden, the Netherlands. During 1953-58, he pursued his studies at the Academy for Visual Design and Architecture in Tilburg. In 1969, his refusal for army retraining exercises was backed up by an antimilitaristic exhibition at the Electric Centre in Haarlem. Since then he has been engaged in many creative shows and his work has been acknowledged in his country and elsewhere. In 1998, Queen Beatrix honoured him with a prestigious “Knight in the Order of the Dutch Lion”. Over the years, he has produced a number of significant animation films.
