CHANGES
IRELAND
Short

2005 / 35mm / Col / English / 3 mins 32 secs / Animation

Two caterpillars wildly in love embark on a journey of change, but will they feel the same way when they emerge from their chrysalises?

The film uses an interesting mixture of photography, illustration and digital video. All illustrative elements, such as trees, plants, grass and the characters were first drawn using pen and paper, then scanned into a computer along with original photography of flowers, plants and trees to create a 3-D set where the action takes place. The eyes and mouth of characters were shot on mini-DV using a Panasonic DVX100, then imported into After Effects where they were masked off and composited onto the drawings. The Butterfly wings are also original photographs taken at the Dublin Butterfly Farm.

All elements were constructed and animated using Adobe After Effects, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Premiere, Apple Motion and Macromedia Flash.

A poignant journey of two tsunami victims who have been orphaned. However, within their new circumstances, they subconsciously find a family. It is in times of such natural disasters and grave crises that the kindest of humanitarian feelings begin to manifest.

Tsunami 81 derives its title from Baby 81, the toddler who was lost and later united with his parents after the tsunami. The main protagonist of the film is a child who has lost his family and becomes an aquaphobic to the extent that he does not even touch water!
